KING FEATURES PARTNERS WITH GIRL SCOUTS OF THE USA FOR ITS “YEAR OF THE GIRL” 100th ANNIVERSARY

Leading Syndicate to Distribute a Five-Days-A-Week “Girl Scout Greats” Feature Nationally to Newspapers and Websites Beginning March 12, 2012

New York –On March 12, 2012, the Girl Scouts of the USA is celebrating its 100th anniversary and will honor this historical occasion
by declaring its centennial as the “Year of the Girl” and launching ToGetHerThere, a cause campaign dedicated to narrowing the leadership gap between men and women in a single generation. Girl Scouts of the USA has partnered with King Features Syndicate to nationally distribute a print and online feature called “Girl Scout Greats,” a five-days-a-week panel that will run for an entire year starting March 12.

Distributed by King Features to newspapers and websites, each panel includes a headshot photo of an accomplished woman who was a Girl Scout accompanied by a brief statement explaining the impact that the Girl Scouts experience had on her individual personal and professional development. Celebrity and notable women, as well as prominent, successful women from 112 local Girl Scout Councils throughout the United States, will be profiled in this yearlong feature. Girl Scouts of the USA has a spectacular record at producing accomplished leaders. Sixty-nine percent of female U.S. Senators, 67 percent of female members of the House of Representatives and 80 percent of female business owners were once Girl Scouts.

“We are honored to be a partner of such an iconic organization as the Girl Scouts of the USA during this momentous year, said T.R. “Rocky” Shepard III, president of King Features Syndicate. “The ‘Girl Scout Greats’ panel provides a powerful and inspirational message to women and men alike. We couldn’t think of a better messenger to deliver the Girl Scouts’ mission statement of instilling the ideals of ethics, community service and leadership than the daily newspaper.”

During the Girl Scouts’ “Year of the Girl” celebration, local Girl Scouts chapters nationwide will mix celebrations of the organization’s 100 years as the premier leadership experience for girls with efforts to create a sense of urgency around girls’ issues. These celebrations will include high-profile regional events, such as Rock the Mall in Washington, D.C.; the Garrison Training Center Centennial Camporee in Georgia; the State Fair of Texas; and the Girls World Forum in Illinois in concert with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). The centennial celebration will culminate in the State of Girls Summit in New York City one year after launch, in March 2013.
